World of Racing

It's all change here in the UK with the dramatic news that Channel 4 TV has lost the contract to cover British Racing and from January 1st 2017 it will go to ITV!
Channel 4 has provided live coverage of British Horseracing for 30 years but following a collapse in viewing figures the Racecourse Media Group who control racing's tv rights has sensationally awarded them to ITV in a 4 year deal worth around £30,000,000!
There is no doubt something had to be done because since Channel 4 secured a 4 year exclusive deal 3 years ago viewing figures have dropped and dropped indeed Qipco Champions  Day- the richest days racing in the UK -  which had a viewing audience of over 1,000,000 4 years ago was watched by just 367,000 viewers last october!
It wasn't just the viewing figures that were causing problems for many people were complaining about the programmes calling them 'dull' and 'boring' compared to when they used to be 'fun and exciting'!
It all started to go downhill when 3 years ago Channel 4 got rid of many of the existing presenters - and I was one of them alongside people like John McCririck, John Francome, Mike Cattermole, Alistair Down, Lesley Graham etc - and brought in a new team of presenters headed by Clare Balding and also a new production team.
The viewers switched off in droves and last year for whatever reason Ms Balding elected to front the Boat Race for BBC on the first saturday in April rather than host the world's greatest steeplechase the Grand National at Aintree on Channel 4!
ITV who beat off bids from Channel 4, Sky and Eurosport will cover 34 days a year including all the big races on the main ITV terrestrial channel and another 60 days will go out on ITV 4.
This has to be good news for British Racing for whatever anyone thought about the output the viewing figures had collapsed to such an extent that there were big worries that sponsors and advertisers would be put off and might even pull out!
Viewing figures for other sports seems to be on the increase and on the same day that this news about racing coverage was announced the Premier League that looks after the UK soccer rights announced a new world wide TV deal worth billions of pounds!
A day out at the races should be interesting, exciting and exhilarating and that should be the same for the stay at home racegoer who for whatever reason couldn't make it to the track.
As a young kid i got my kicks from watching racing on TV on a saturday afternoon and that's what got me wanting to spend the whole of my life in the industry and i have never regretted a day of it. I wonder sometimes if many youngsters feel the same today?
Of course it could just be that racing might not be attracting the race fans it used to but according to official figures which were also released this week more and more people are actually going racing and the Jockey Club that own 15 of the major tracks in the UK announced record sales in 2015!
Just who will produce and present the new racing coverage from next year has yet to be decided but its fair to say there will be some big changes!
Lets hope for all our sakes those changes are for the better!
